Beach Holiday Turns into Nightmare: German Tourist Scammed via Fraudulent Card Machines in Brazil

A resident of Germany who traveled to Brazil fell prey to a scam where fake card machine fraud were involved and lost €4,000. The fraud occurred on Friday while the person was at the beach and unknowingly entered the PIN at two different fake card machines.

Bank Refuses Refund Due to PIN Authorization

Fraud was reported within an hour and a half by the victim, who blocked the card and got a police report from the local station in Brazil; but according to the victim’s German bank, it denies any refunds or chargebacks. The bank said that the transactions were authorized with the customer’s PIN, therefore they are not refundable.

Were There Red Flags?

The victim wonders if the bank was obliged to mark the transactions as suspicious. Two sizeable withdrawals,€2,300 and €1,800, were made within a five-minute interval and distinctly atypical of normal spending patterns. Yet, there was no intervention or alert from the bank.

Exploring Legal Options

In as much as the bank claims that policy is the standard, the victim will seek legal advice on how to possibly challenge the said decision. The case looks into the vulnerability of travelers and questions the tendency of banks to detect unusual transaction activity.
