Concerns were raised about a suspicious commission request for artwork from a new and digital PayPal user. While the digital artist handles payment via PayPal, they received a message requesting a portrait of the dog with the dog’s name, breed, and background mentioned as references.
Vague Responses Spark Red Flags
The request appeared to be genuine enough to be taken seriously, but when the artist proceeded to ask the buyer for clarification, the situation turned from suspicious to outright treacherous. Instead of providing the artist with poignant answers about, say, materials or dimensions, the client offered vague terms such as “yes,” “sitting,” and “no,” indicating nothing specific. This led to the artist asking for further confirmation on the commission, such as the style, time, and expectations.
Invoice Caution and Online Safety
The wary artist refused to share his PayPal email address citing it as a direct mode of contact and chose to adopt the PayPal invoices system, which is a much safer method under most circumstances. Having said that, there is still concern. In general, invoices are considered safer than having to share an actual PayPal email address; however, they can still be abused by scammers to file fraudulent claims and chargebacks.
